5 Questions to Ask when Hiring a Carpet Cleaner

Having the carpets in your home professional cleaned can definitely make your home feel totally clean and make your carpets look new again, but there are some questions you should ask of a potential carpet cleaning company before agreeing to hire them on.

Do they offer written estimates?

Any reputable company should provide this service for you. They will typically send a representative out to your home to take a look at the area(s) you want to have cleaned. From that they can tell you how much it’s going to cost, and will able to give you an estimate on paper. This helps to give you an idea of how much you’re going to spend, and it helps to avoid any unforeseen costs.

Do they offer any kind of guarantee?

Offering a guarantee means they stand behind their work, and if you aren’t completely happy with it they will more than likely be willing to work with you to fix the problem. What’s more is that having a guarantee they will probably be less likely to cut corners because it will end up costing them much more than it would have to just do the job right the first time.

Can they provide a list of happy clients, current or previous?

By speaking to other clients you can get a feel for what kind of company this is. Ask questions such regarding whether they were on time, did they finish within the time they said they would, were there any extra “surprise” costs, and so on. If you are finding a recurring theme – such as not showing up when they said they would – then you will be able to make a much more informed decision.

Do they carry insurance? If so, what kind?

Cleaning carpets isn’t exactly a dangerous job, but that doesn’t mean the representative won’t get hurt while performing the service. If the company doesn’t have current insurance and their employee is injured in your home then you could be liable for that or they could file a lawsuit against you. Make sure they have insurance.

Are there cleaning options?

Most cleaning companies will have different options for cleaning your carpet, often offered in terms of packages. If the representative that comes out to give you an estimate is pressuring you to purchase a specific package then you may not want to hire them; look for a company that will provide you with a variety of options so you can determine what is right for you. They should provide you with recommendations based on their experience, but ultimately the decision is up to you and they should respect that.

Selecting a company to clean your carpets is a process you should think about because while it is only a cleaning service you are paying for it. It’s an investment in your home and you shouldn’t just hire the first company you find, take your time and do some research. Once you find a company you are comfortable with then you can officially hire them and know that the job will be done right the first time without cutting corners and to your satisfaction.
